Garner recently completed production on The Assistant, an upcoming narrative feature film charting a day in the life of a powerful producer’s assistant (played by Garner). The movie is directed by Kitty Green and produced by James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain), Scott Macaulay (Casting JonBenet) and Jen Dana (Brigsby Bear). She will also appear in the upcoming Amazon Original series Modern Love.
Last fall, Garner co-starred opposite Emma Stone, Jonah Hill and Justin Theroux in Netflix’s critically acclaimed, 10-episode series Maniac, directed by Cary Fukunaga. She also co-starred opposite Eric Bana, Connie Britton and Juno Temple in Bravo’s true-crime anthology series Dirty John. The limited series, based on the hit podcast of the same name, became the highest-rated scripted series ever on the network, with ratings growing throughout its run. Garner was nominated for a 2019 Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Limited Series on behalf of her performance.
In 2015, Garner received critical recognition for her performance as a pregnant teenager in Paul Weitz’s Grandma, which she starred in opposite Lily Tomlin. The film originally premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and was quickly acquired and released by Sony Pictures Classics that summer. It was named one of the Top 10 Best Independent Films that year by The National Board of Review.
Other film credits include memorable performances in One Percent More Humid, Tomato Red, We Are What We Are, Electrick Children, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Sin City 2. On the small screen, Garner has been praised for her work on The Paramount Network’s Waco, as well as FX’s critically acclaimed series The Americans. She also appeared in HBO’s GIRLS and Netflix’s The Get Down.
