    Thorsten Sabel says that his work has the aspiration to support a film’s characters and atmosphere without sacrificing authenticity. Sabel was born in 1969 in Essen, Germany, and worked initially as a sign-maker and decorator. His career in the art department and in production design got off the ground in 1996 with Love, Money, Love, directed by Phillip Gröning. Sabel studied production design at IFS Cologne, graduating in 1997. There he met the production designers Uli Hanisch and Volker Schäfer, beginning a collaboration that would span numerous productions. 

    Since then he has worked in the art department on a number of national and international features, including Amélie, The Experiment, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Cloud Atlas, Nymphomaniac, The Reader and the television series “Babylon Berlin.” His credits as production designer include Die Besucherin, The Crocodiles: All for One, Snowman’s Land, Young Light, Antonio im Wunderland and Draußen in meinem Kopf.
