Sebastian Thaler shoots with a lucid immediacy that clearly makes him a talent to watch. This second-generation cinematographer, son of esteemed D.P. Wolfgang Thaler, continues to be a trailblazer with his innovative lighting. He has shot in a variety of locations including Germany, Poland, Kenya, Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina, Jordan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United Arabic Emirates. In 2019 Thaler’s work on the comedic short Desaturated, directed by Marina Stepanska, debuted at the Odessa International Film Festival. That same year the Jury of the Association of Directors of Photography of Argentina (ADF) awarded Thaler the prize of Best Photography for his work on the feature Falling. Lensed in 2017, the Stepanska-directed feature received kudos at several film festivals including Camerimage, where Thaler earned a nomination for Best Cinematography Debut. Also shot in 2017 was Juri Rechinsky’s feature Ugly, which also earned recognition at Austria’s Diagonale as Thaler accepted the award for Best Cine

Thaler is currently based in Vienna, Austria, where he completed his Master in Cinematography degree at Film Academy Vienna in 2017, under the guidance of Walter Kindler and Michael Haneke. While studying Thaler was the DP of Everything Will Be Okay, which won a Student Academy Award and received a nomination for the Oscar for Best Live Action Short From 2009 to 2016 Thaler had the privilege of working as a camera assistant and operator under the esteemed eyes of Edward Lachman, Enzo Brandner, Wolfgang Thaler and others. Thaler’s native tongue is German but he also speaks Polish, English and Russian.
