A native of Houston, Texas, Annette O'Toole began her professional training at the Niland School of Dance at the age of three. When she was thirteen, her family moved to Los Angeles, where Annette made her television debut dancing on The Danny Kaye show.
A student of legendary acting teacher Peggy Feury, Annette attended classes at the Loft Studio in Los Angeles throughout her early career. She has worked continuously in television, showcasing her musical abilities as Tammy Wynette in Stand By Your Man (1981) and as Lola Lamar in 1985's Copacabana.
In 1997, while filming Lifetime's Final Justice in Portland, Oregon, she met actor Michael McKean. The two wed in 1999. From 2001 - 2011, Annette again found herself beloved of Clark Kent, this time as the superhero's adoptive mother Martha in the WB's (later the CW's) Smallville.
In 2011 Annette began work on the groundbreaking musical Southern Comfort by Dan Collins (book and lyrics) and Julianne Wick Davis (music). Based on Kate Davis' documentary of the same name, Southern Comfort tells the story of transgender man Robert Eads and his chosen family. For her work as Robert Eads in the 2016 production at The Public, Annette earned a Lucille Lortel Award.
Other notable Film and TV projects include: The Outer Limits, Law & Order, Imaginary Crimes, Here on Earth, Lie to Me, Private Practice, The Finder, Grey's Anatomy, Halt and Catch Fire, Battle Creek, Stephen King's 11.22.63, Ingrid Jungermann's Women Who Kill, and We Go On by Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton.
And in early 2019, Annette will be featured on film, television and the stage, in the independent film Blow The Man Down, the Berkeley Rep production of The Good Book; and Virgin River, the upcoming American romance drama web television series based on the Robyn Carr novels (Netflix).
